Proposals

See the budget and labor

Read the proposal budget, labor budget and labor sources.

Who can do this: Anyone in your company who can open the project. The proposal must be Finalized.

The Budget tab shows what the proposal's price is made of and how much labor the job needs. It opens once you finalize the proposal. Until then, the tab is greyed out.

Open the budget

  1. Open the project, then open the proposal.
  2. Click the Budget tab.
  3. Click the view name at the top of the tab to switch between Proposal budget, Labor budget and Labor sources.

Proposal budget

The top shows the Total proposed value, the Total expected cost, the Gross margin and, if there is any, the Proposal overhead. Then each work type (type of work) shows its Summary value and Gross margin, and a table for each of its cost accounts. Each line in an account table shows its:

  • Cost basis: your cost.
  • Gross margin: the amount left from the price after your cost.
  • Proposed value: the price you charge.

The Total expected cost says how much tax it includes: "use tax" when every work type is Materials and labor installed, "sales tax" when every work type is Material resale, or "sales and use tax" when the proposal has both.

Each account ends with a tax row and its Subtotal. The tax row depends on how the work type is taxed:

  • Materials and labor installed: for example, Use tax (7.00% of cost basis).
  • Material resale: for example, Sales tax (7.00% of proposed value).

The labor account is taxed only on shop labor, and its tax row says so.

If the proposal has indirect costs for General project overhead (costs that cover the whole job, not one work type), a General project overhead table above the work types lists each one with its Budgeted expense, Cost basis, Gross margin and Proposed value.

Labor budget

Shows how long each labor activity takes for each work type, with its Duration, Level, Number and Cost budget. Click an activity to hide or show the activities under it. The top of each work type shows the Total man-days to complete (a man-day is one person working one 8-hour day) and the total hours.

To change how durations are shown, click the duration menu at the top of the tab on the Labor budget view and choose:

  • Formatted (d h m): days, hours and minutes, with 8 hours to a day.
  • Minutes
  • Hours
  • Man-days

Labor sources

Shows which parts the labor comes from, grouped by work type. Each row lists the Part name, Account name, Account level and Duration. Durations here are always in minutes.

Click Print at the top of the tab to print the view you're looking at. See Print drawings and lists.

What happens next

  • The budget shows the totals locked in when you finalized. A finalized proposal can't be changed.
  • Use the parts lists to order materials. See Use parts lists and request quotes.
