Set your margin schedule
Set your default and minimum margins, margins by project cost and project type, and the seller margin schedule for seller companies.
Margin is the share of the selling price that is left after your costs. The Margin schedule page sets the margin each new proposal starts with, based on how much the job costs. Estimators can still change the margins on each proposal.
To open the page, go to Settings and click Margin schedule.
How BidUnity picks a starting margin
When part of a proposal has no margin yet, BidUnity adds up the proposal's total cost before margin and looks for the row in your margin schedule whose range contains it. A range includes its Min threshold amount and runs up to, but not including, its Max threshold amount.
- If a row matches and it has a margin for the project's type, BidUnity uses that margin.
- If a row matches but has no margin for the project's type, BidUnity uses the row's Gross margin.
- If no row matches, BidUnity uses your Default margin.
You can't save a margin on a proposal that is below your Minimum margin.
Set the general margins
- Under General margins, click Edit general margins.
- Enter a Default margin. This is used when a proposal's cost falls outside every range in your schedule.
- Enter a Minimum margin. This is the smallest margin anyone at your company can use on a proposal.
- Click Save changes.
Both margins must be 99.99% or less, and the default margin can't be lower than the minimum margin.
If you raise the minimum margin above a margin already in your schedule, BidUnity asks you to update the schedule first.
Add a margin schedule row
- Under Margin schedule, click Add margin schedule.
- Enter the Gross margin for this range. It must be at least your minimum margin and no more than 99.99%.
- Enter the Min threshold and Max threshold: the lowest and highest proposal cost, in dollars, this row covers. The max must be greater than the min.
- Optional: enter a margin for any project type that should use a different margin in this range. The form uses short names for the project types: Open bid (Online plan room listing), GC auto (GC bid list invitation), GC award (GC personal invitation, negotiated), GC open (GC personal invitation, not negotiated), GC open design (GC request, no drawings, not negotiated), Owner designing (Owner request, designing, no drawings), Direct invite (Owner request, drawings available) and Service (Service work). Leave a project type blank to use the row's gross margin. Each must be at least your minimum margin and no more than 99.99%.
- Click Create margin schedule.
Ranges can't overlap. If the new range overlaps one you already have, BidUnity asks you to check the thresholds.
Edit or delete a row
- To edit a row, click its pencil icon in the Edit column, change the values, and click Save changes.
- To delete a row, click its trash icon in the Delete column, then click Delete to confirm.
What happens next
- Each work type on a proposal that has no margin yet gets the starting margin from your schedule. A proposal's summary groups its costs by work type (type of work), and each work type has its own margin. See Review the summary and finalize.
- Margins you have already saved on a proposal stay as they are.
- For worked examples of how costs, multipliers and margins combine, see How pricing works.
Seller margin schedule
A seller company sells its parts to other companies through BidUnity. The Seller margin schedule sets the margin BidUnity adds to your parts to work out the price a buyer sees. It is based on the buyer's total cost for all the parts they order from your company.
To open it, go to Settings and click Seller margin schedule.
Set the default seller margin
- Under Default seller margin, click Edit default seller margin.
- Enter the Default margin, from 0% to 99.99%.
- Click Update default margin.
BidUnity uses the default seller margin when the buyer's cost falls outside every range below. If you haven't set up any ranges, it always uses the default.
Add a seller margin range
- Under Margin schedule, click Add seller margin schedule.
- Enter the Gross margin percent.
- Enter the Min threshold (inclusive) and Max threshold (exclusive) for the buyer's total cost. The max must be greater than the min.
- Click Create seller margin schedule.
Ranges can't overlap. To change a range, click its pencil icon and click Save changes. To remove it, click its trash icon, then click Delete to confirm.
