Projects

Create a project

Add a new project with its name, type and site address.

Who can do this: Standard users and company admins. Field/shop workers can't create projects.

Create a project for each new job you want to price. You need a name, a project type, and the city and state (or province, in Canada) of the work site. You can add the rest later.

Create a project

  1. Click Projects in the top menu.
  2. Click New project.
  3. Under Project details, fill in:
    • Project name: up to 50 characters. Each project name must be unique in your company.
    • Project type: where the job came from. See the list below.
    • Default length units: how lengths show on this project. Each team member can still choose their own display format.
  4. Under Site address, enter where the work is happening:
    • Country: United States (the default) or Canada. Pick it first. For Canada, State becomes Province and ZIP code becomes Postal code.
    • City and State (or Province) are required.
    • Street address, Apt, suite, unit and ZIP code (or Postal code) are optional, and you can add them later.
  5. Click Create project.

You can also click New project from the project picker when you add an event on the company calendar. The new project is then picked for the event, and you stay on the calendar. See Use the company calendar.

Project types

Project type records where the job came from, which keeps your reports and project history clear. The choices are:

  • Online plan room listing (the default). A plan room is a website where project drawings are posted for bidders.
  • GC bid list invitation. A GC, or general contractor, is the company running the whole job, who hires trades like yours.
  • GC personal invitation (negotiated)
  • GC personal invitation (not negotiated)
  • GC request (no drawings, not negotiated)
  • Owner request (designing, no drawings)
  • Owner request (drawings available)
  • Service work

If BidUnity finds a possible duplicate

  • Same name: If another project in your company already has this name, a message shows under Project name with a link to open the existing project. Change the name to continue.
  • Same street address: If another project in your company has the same street address, the Possible duplicate project address window opens. Click Open existing project to go to it, or Create project anyway if this really is a different project.

What happens next

  • The new project opens on its Proposals tab, ready for your first proposal. See Create a proposal.
  • The project starts with the status Request for Pricing. See Project statuses.
  • For a US site address, BidUnity looks up the sales and use tax rates. These rates feed the tax on the proposal summary. See Review the summary and finalize.
  • If the tax lookup fails, the project is still created and you see "Project created with warnings". Both rates start at 7%.
  • BidUnity doesn't look up tax rates for a Canadian address. Both rates start at 7% and you see "Project created with warnings". To change a proposal's rates, see Set tax rates.
  • Add the general contractor, owner and other companies on the job under Contacts. See Manage project contacts.
