Edit product validations and components
Set up validations, components, and their parts, labor and constraints.
Inside a system, each product validation is a tested and approved setup of the system, with its approval details and limits. Each validation holds components, such as the head, sill, jambs, mullions and glass. Each component lists the parts and labor it needs.
To change a shared system, copy it first. See Browse, copy and edit systems.
Fields measured in inches, such as Max height, Face dimension and Custom length, take a decimal or a fraction: 99.5, 99-1/2 or 99 13/16. You can add an inch mark (" or in) if you like. If BidUnity can't read what you typed, you see "Enter inches, like 99.5 or 99-1/2".
View a product validation
- Open the system from Catalog > All systems.
- In the Product validations card, click the validation.
The Validation report details card shows the approval (the approving authority, a link to the approval document, whether it is restricted, and when it expires), the Max pressures (positive and negative wind pressure), the Max dimensions (height and width) and the Compatible door frame.
The Components card lists the components, grouped by component type. Use the Product validations list on the left to move between validations, or click System overview to go back to the system.
Add or edit a product validation
- Open the system.
- Click New product validation. To change an existing one, open it and click Edit config.
- Fill in the fields:
- Product validation name: must be unique within the system.
- Approval authority, Approval authority doc URL and Approval expiration: who approved the product, a link to the approval document, and when the approval expires.
- Has approval restriction: Yes or No.
- Document reference number.
- Max positive pressure and Max negative pressure: the highest wind pressures the setup is approved for.
- Max height and Max width: the largest size the setup is approved for.
- Compatible door frame: the door frame that works with this setup, or None.
- Click Create for a new validation, or Save.
To delete the validation and all of its components, click Remove, then Remove again to confirm. This can't be undone.
You can't remove a validation that any proposal still uses. BidUnity tells you how many uses it found, for example "This validation can't be deleted because it is used by 1 specification and 3 elevations."
Copy a product validation
Any company admin can copy a validation, including one from a shared system. The copy goes into one of your company's systems.
- Open the validation and click Copy config.
- Under Choose product system, pick one of your company's systems for this vendor, or Create a new product system.
- If you're creating a new system, enter the Name for product system. It can't match one of your company's systems or a shared system, in any mix of capitals.
- Enter the Name for product validation. It starts as the current name with "Copy" added, and must be unique within the system.
- Click Create copy of product validation.
You see "The product validation was copied, this is the new validation", and the copy opens.
Add a picture to a validation
- Open the validation.
- Under the Product validations list, click Add picture and choose an image of 5 MB or less.
To replace it, click Change picture. To delete it, click Remove picture, then Remove picture again to confirm.
Add or edit a component
- Open the validation.
- In the Components card, click New component. To change an existing one, open it and click Edit component.
- Choose the Component type, such as Head, Sill, Jamb, Mullion, Horizontal, Glass lite or Overall elevation. The types offered depend on the system type.
- Enter the Component name and any Notes.
- Fill in the other fields shown for that type. Depending on the type, these include Face dimension, Thickness/depth, Centerline, Deduction size, Sizing, Shim space, Split by doors, the I value, S value and U value, and whether it is the default for its component type. Centerline can be negative.
- Click Create for a new component, or Save.
To delete the component, click Remove, then Remove again to confirm.
Add a part to a component
- Open the component.
- In the Parts card, click Add part.
- In Choose part..., search with Search parts by name..., select the part, and click Select part.
- Fill in how the part is used:
- Part use: the rule BidUnity uses to work out the part's size and count on each elevation. The choices depend on the part's purchase type and the component type. See Part use conventions.
- Distance on center or Custom length (inches): shown for the Custom distance on center and Custom length part uses.
- Part orientation: Male, Female or Unitary.
- Quantity: at least 1.
- Applied: per each piece works the part out for each piece of the component. per each elevation works it out once for the whole elevation.
- Add to processed size: an amount added to the size the part use works out. It can be negative. Not shown for Total area parts.
- Applied to: shown for receptor components. Choose whether the added amount applies to every segment or only to segments at the perimeter.
- Will part be cut?: shown for stock length parts. Choose whether to cut the part and include it on the cut list.
- Will part be assembled?: choose whether the part is assembled into a fixed panel. If it is, also choose Show part on assembly list?.
- Click Add part.
To change a part later, click its name in the Parts card and choose Edit part. Click Save, or click Remove to take the part off the component.
Add labor to a part
Labor is time spent on a part, priced with your company's labor rates.
- Open the component.
- In the Parts card, click the part's name and choose Add labor.
- Choose the Labor account.
- Enter the Labor minutes.
- Choose how the minutes are Applied: Per part, Per linear foot or Per square foot. Per linear foot is offered only for Total length, Stock length and Stock length, spliceable parts, and Per square foot only for Total area parts.
- Add a Description if you like.
- Click Add labor.
The part now shows a labor line with the minutes, how they are applied, and the labor account, such as "15 minutes Per part" followed by the account name. The Total labor for all parts summary at the top of the Parts card adds up the labor. Click a labor line to change it.
Add a constraint
A constraint is a limit on a component, such as the highest wind pressure or the largest size it can take.
- Open the component.
- In the Constraints card, click Add constraint. It isn't offered on Column/section components.
- Enter the Limiting positive pressure, Limiting negative pressure, and the size limits. Overall elevation and Glass lite components have Max height and Max width. Most other components have Max length and Effective spacing. Heads and sills have only Max length.
- Click Add constraint.
Add a section drawing
A section drawing is a cut-through picture of the component. It isn't shown on Overall elevation or Column/section components.
- Open the component.
- In the Section drawing card, click Upload picture and choose an image of 5 MB or less.
To delete it, click Delete picture, then Delete to confirm.
What happens next
When a specification on a proposal uses this system and validation, BidUnity uses the components, part uses and labor here to work out each elevation's parts and labor. See How pricing works.
